Shooting in the Himalayas in Nepal was terrifically exhilarating. Almost anywhere you framed there was striking imagery. Epic mountain ranges, misty monasteries perched on 4000m mountains, and the distinctive Buddhist prayer wheels and flags.

And at the pinnacle of it all, Everest.

Base Camp was one of the most remarkable experiences. The altitude (5500m) made the going extremely tough, but also made the quality of the light unique… the thinness of the atmosphere contributing an almost space-like clarity to the images. The majesty and obvious danger of the mountain gave me renewed respect for those who climb it.

The logistics of high altitude movement was the biggest challenge… hikes of several hours up mountains, skilful helicopter manoeuvring between winding gorges and clouds… and the strain of reduced oxygen.

I went with Miller’s 1505 lightweight legs that can be hiked with, ABC’s carbon fibre jib and Angenieux’s lightweight Optimo zooms. Fantastic teamwork from our tiny crew and herculean Sherpa team
